Chosen as one of Canada's Best Diversity Employers for 2011:
By Kristina Leung and Richard Yerema, Mediacorp Canada Inc. staff editors  ( Feb 21, 2011)

Some of the reasons why Business Development Bank of Canada was selected as one of Canada's Best Diversity Employers 2011:
  • in 2003, established a diversity action committee composed of twenty employees from across the nation -- the committee creates two-year plans that outline the development of an inclusive workplace, which are reviewed and revised on an annual basis
  • recognizes employee excellence in championing diversity affairs through internal awards
  • manages numerous affinity groups that work in conjunction with the national committee to plan awareness sessions and events as well as meetings with local organizations and associations -- the groups also function as consultative bodies and advise on policy and programs
  • new employees attend a mandatory "New Hires" conference, which includes an information session with a member of the national diversity committee and a diversity training workshop
  • many employees volunteer their time with numerous outreach organizations including ISIS, Lebanese Chamber of Commerce and Industry, and The Gay and Lesbian Business Association of BC, to name a few
"My hearing impairment has never affected my career at BDC. I don't feel different from any other BDC employee and I continue to develop skills that allow me to pursue my career objectives. BDC also provides a work environment adapted to my needs. This includes interpreter services, a specialized phone system and a device to alert me to emergency situations. But, above all, I feel mutual respect in my interactions with colleagues."
Anna S., Facilities Coordinator
