Chosen as one of Canada's Best Diversity Employers for 2011:
By Kristina Leung and Richard Yerema, Mediacorp Canada Inc. staff editors  ( Feb 21, 2011)

Some of the reasons why Cameco Corporation was selected as one of Canada's Best Diversity Employers 2011:
  • in 2008, created a three-year employment equity plan with short-term goals for designated employee groups -- the plan was reviewed and in the past year to assess whether additional goals were necessary
  • partners with "Women in Mining" and the Mining Human Resource Council to research employment barriers faced by women in the mining industry
  • developed a northern workforce strategy to focus on the recruitment of residents from northern Saskatchewan, of which a large percentage are of Aboriginal ancestry -- the strategy includes supporting local Aboriginal owned and operated businesses and providing work placement opportunities
  • manages an extensive Aboriginal outreach program with a particular focus on students, providing scholarships and participating in career fairs
  • helps Aboriginal employees maintain traditional lifestyles and employs elder advisors on site at four of Cameco's northern locations
  • partners with Equitek to post job vacancies and provide outreach services -- also utilizes the Aboriginal Inclusion Network to source qualified Aboriginal candidates
  • the company's Ontario office provides trades-related apprenticeship opportunities to members of Mississauga First Nation
  • sponsors the "Multi-party Training Program", a co-operative training initiative developed by the province of Saskatchewan, federal government, and Aboriginal and Métis authorities
"After completing a Cameco-sponsored mine training program at Northlands College I got my first job as an environmental technician at Cameco's Cigar Lake project. With the help of the company's career transition program, I was able to complete my environmental engineering degree and progress to my current role. Cameco saw the advantage and new perspective brought forth by having me, an aboriginal female resident of Northern Saskatchewan, in a professional position."
Kathryn D., Environmental Specialist
