Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation

Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation
Chosen as one of Canada's Best Diversity Employers for 2009:
By Rachel Caballero and Richard Yerema, Mediacorp Canada Inc. staff editors  (Feb 20, 2009)

Some of the reasons why Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation was selected as one of Canada's Best Diversity Employers 2009:
  • implemented an Aboriginal recruitment strategy at their Ontario offices and provided internships to Aboriginal students
  • integrates diversity accountability into the performance measurement process for managers
  • established a special program in 1993 that provides mentoring, skills development opportunities and work experience to individuals with Down Syndrome
  • posts job positions with organizations that represent Aboriginal and disabled individuals as well as advertising positions in ethnic newspapers

 Support for Aboriginal Youth

Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC) provides job opportunities to Aboriginal candidates through a formal Aboriginal recruitment program at their Ontario offices, and an internship program for Aboriginal youth at their Prairie region locations.

Recently, the corporation has also attended a career fair for Aboriginal youth in Québec, informing attendees about the career possibilities available for Aboriginal candidates in their province. As part of their overall leadership development program, CMHC has encouraged Aboriginal candidates to apply for positions on their national management team. As a result of this specific effort, a senior Aboriginal employee was promoted to the position.

Creating Opportunities for Persons with Disabilities

In 1993, CMHC created a special needs program to provide mentoring and work experience for individuals with intellectual disabilities. The corporation currently provides permanent employment to three individuals with Down Syndrome. In another initiative, CMHC works in partnership with the National Educational Association of Disabled Students (NEADS) to recruit disabled students enrolled in human resource programs.

"Given that I am an employee with a physical disability and that I work in Human Resources, I am in a good position to say that CMHC greatly facilitates employment integration. Having worked at CMHC for 20 years now, I have had good career opportunities and the chance to develop my potential in different assignments, despite significant physical limitations."
