Chosen as one of Canada's Best Diversity Employers for 2012:
By Kristina Leung and Richard Yerema, Mediacorp Canada Inc. staff editors  ( Feb 20, 2012)

Some of the reasons why Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce / CIBC was selected as one of Canada's Best Diversity Employers 2012:
  • manages a national employment equity and diversity council, eight committees that represent each of the bank's business units, and recently introduced diversity champions within the bank's global operations and recruitment teams
  • recently hosted a 5th annual "Diversity Congress" to present the bank's employment equity and diversity plan to key stakeholders
  • organized a month-long celebration of diversity and inclusion across all of the bank's operations -- during the month, hosted a corporate roundtable and invited 60 representatives from outside organizations to participate in a discussion of current and future diversity issues
  • manages a women's employee network to provide support to female employees through mentoring and career planning programs -- membership has recently expanded to include employees from additional office locations
  • maintains an employee network for persons with disabilities called "WorkAbility" and hosts a national access awareness week to promote accommodation -- also partners with Ability Edge to offer paid internships to graduates with disabilities
  • in addition, provides employees with internal support through a variety of employee affinity groups such as the Asian employee network, Black employee network, and a Pride network for LGBT employees
  • recently introduced a collaborative mentoring program across all affinity groups to match employees with members of different networks
  • participates in career events and conferences hosted by community organizations such as Skills for Change, Inclusion Works, People in Motion, Neil Squire Society and JVS Toronto, to name a few
"As a person with severe vision loss, I thought it was next to impossible to find a great job with a great employer. Well, I was mistaken. Through CIBC's Workplace Accommodation Program, I was asked if I required accommodation for my interview. I wasn't even hired, and yet CIBC treated me with such respect. Once hired, CIBC provided me with vision enhancement software that was installed on my computer for training, and then later onto my work station computer, without ever having to remind them of the original request. I am extremely grateful to CIBC for being there for me as my employer and giving me the tools I need to succeed."
