Chosen as one of Canada's Best Diversity Employers for 2013:
By Kristina Leung and Richard Yerema, Mediacorp Canada Inc. staff editors   (Feb 18, 2013)

Some of the reasons why City of Saskatoon was selected as one of Canada's Best Diversity Employers 2013:
  • maintains a cultural diversity and race relations committee and created the role of Diversity Coordinator to help manage the development of diversity programs and policies
  • also manages an accessibility advisory committee, responsible for the creation of an action plan to improve accessibility to the City's services, facilities and infrastructure
  • established a dedicated position to manage Aboriginal affairs and build relationships with Aboriginal communities and hosted training workshops on Aboriginal history
  • in partnership with the Saskatchewan Tribal Council, Saskatchewan Indian Institute of Technologies (SIIT) and the Gabriel Dumont Institute, created the "Aboriginal Transit Operators Program", which includes employment resources such as group information sessions, preliminary in-class training on air brakes, and interview preparation workshops
  • the City also created the "Growing Careers in Saskatoon" project to provide assistance to unemployed Aboriginal students who have minimal work experience -- the program offers paid summer training and temporary employment facilitated by the City
  • offers employment opportunities for persons with disabilities, in partnership with a number of community organizations including the Saskatchewan Abilities Council, Saskatchewan Paraplegic Association and the Canadian Council on Rehabilitation and Work
  • also works with settlement agencies such as the Saskatoon Open Door Society, Global Gathering Place, Immigrant Women of Saskatchewan and the Saskatchewan Intercultural Association to provide mentoring and work placement opportunities to new Canadians
