Ernst & Young LLP

Ernst & Young LLP
Chosen as one of Canada's Best Diversity Employers for 2009:
By Rachel Caballero and Richard Yerema, Mediacorp Canada Inc. staff editors  (Mar 21, 2009)

Some of the reasons why Ernst & Young LLP was selected as one of Canada's Best Diversity Employers 2009:
  • created a full-time Director of Inclusiveness position to develop and oversee the firm's inclusive workplace initiatives
  • has an Inclusiveness Steering Committee chaired by the Chairman and CEO
  • measures the progress of their workplace inclusiveness goals using an employee diversity "census", which helps managers address diversity issues throughout the firm
  • is a pioneer in this field, operating a longstanding Gender Equity Advisory Group and an Ethnic Diversity Task Force
  • holds regular leadership training conferences for visible minority and women employees
  • operates employee networking groups for women, visible minority and LGBT employees

 Inclusive Workplace Strategies

In 2007, Ernst&Young launched a firm-wide campaign to communicate their inclusiveness philosophy and goals to all employees. The brochure entitled "Inclusiveness Matters", described the firm's commitment to inclusiveness in the workplace and its importance to their overall company goals.

In that same year, Ernst&Young organized a live webcast on inclusiveness, with the firm leadership -- including the Chairman and CEO, and managing partners -- speaking frankly about the significance of inclusiveness from their perspective. The unique forum also provided an opportunity for employees to ask questions on gender equity, diversity and related topics.

The firm also created a unique "Inclusiveness Champion" role to participate in the roundtable performance review process. Chosen by senior managers, executive directors, and partners across Canada, Inclusiveness Champions ensure that performance ratings for their office or group are equitable and fair, and that those ratings fully support each employee's career development goals.

Senior-level employees can also attend a series of inclusiveness workshops on topics such as the distinction between equality and equity, how to promote an inclusive workplace culture, and the impact of discrimination on respect in the workplace.

"Participating in the Canadian Ethnic Diversity Task Force has given me [the chance to work with] senior executives, and also reinforced the firm's commitment to diversity for me. It starts at the top. At Ernst & Young, I really believe we not only speak about the importance of a diverse and inclusive workforce, we actually see the actions and results."
