Chosen as one of Canada's Best Diversity Employers for 2013:
By Kristina Leung and Richard Yerema, Mediacorp Canada Inc. staff editors   (Feb 18, 2013)

Some of the reasons why Health Canada / Santé Canada was selected as one of Canada's Best Diversity Employers 2013:
  • maintains employee network groups for Aboriginals, visible minorities, persons with disabilities, young people, and LGBT employees, as well as "Agents of Change", an internal group that promotes diversity awareness and inclusiveness in the workplace
  • in addition to providing support and consulting on relevant policies and programs, each group organizes awareness and networking events throughout the year -- the LGBT group recently hosted a workshop on homophobia, transphobia and heterosexism in the workplace
  • the persons with disabilities network also hosted a learning even on the International Day for Persons with Disabilities, in collaboration with "Agents of Change", to celebrate contributions persons with disabilities have made to the community
  • the department hosted its 6th annual department-wide diversity week celebration, which included learning and development activities, guest lecturers and information kiosks to raise awareness of diversity issues
  • the Atlantic region office manages a training and orientation program to help students of immigrant parents, students with disabilities, Aboriginal or LGBT students understand the employment process at the public service
  • in partnership with the First Nations and Inuit Health branch, the department created a management development program for Aboriginal employees in order to increase the number of Aboriginal candidates for leadership positions -- the program includes up to two-years of in-class training and assignments
"I have Lupus Nephritis, a condition that primarily affects my kidneys, brain, joints and skin. It can be life threatening and I am only able to manage my symptoms through lifestyle changes and a cocktail of medications. Working at Health Canada enables me to keep up to date with the latest advancements in treatments for Lupus, including the approval of Benlysta. The accommodation and support from my managers and work colleagues has not only facilitated my career, it has helped improve and maintain my quality of life."
