Some of the reasons why Health Canada-Santé Canada was selected as one of Canada's Best Diversity Employers 2011:
  • is developing a three-year diversity and employment equity plan to formalize diversity goals and objectives
  • in partnership with the First Nations and Inuit Health branch, the department created a management development program for Aboriginal employees in order to increase the number of Aboriginal candidates for leadership positions -- the program includes up to two-years of in-class training and assignments
  • maintains employee network groups for Aboriginals, visible minorities, persons with disabilities, young people, and LGBT employees -- the groups provide support and consults on relevant policies and programs
  • also manages "Agents of Change", an internal group that promotes diversity awareness and inclusiveness in the workplace
  • reserves one-quarter of available positions in their science management development program for employees who are visible minorities in an effort to increase workforce representation of visible minorities in the management pool
  • provides a variety of training workshops to educate employees on a range of diversity issues -- workshops cover topics such as bias-free selection, accommodation awareness, and the multi-generational workforce
