Chosen as one of Canada's Best Diversity Employers for 2011:
By Kristina Leung and Richard Yerema, Mediacorp Canada Inc. staff editors  ( Feb 21, 2011)

Some of the reasons why KPMG LLP was selected as one of Canada's Best Diversity Employers 2011:
  • manages a national diversity advisory board, which is chaired by CEO Bill Thomas -- the board meets quarterly to discuss and oversee the firm's national diversity, equity, and inclusion strategy
  • in the past year, the diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) team launched a retention strategy focused on women and a family-friendly workplace
  • the team held a series of roundtable discussions and interviews, and analyzed current family-focused benefits -- at the same time, the firm launched the "Working Parents Network" for employees who have recently become parents
  • requires all employees to complete mandatory diversity in the workplace training, which has customized sections for partners, managers, and staff
  • also provides bias-free interview training for employees involved in the recruitment process, as well as information on mental health and accommodation
  • partners with JOIN, Job Opportunity Information Network, which supports the employment efforts of persons with disabilities -- ensures jobs are posted with JOIN and is currently developing a program to designate work opportunities for the disabled community
  • launched a global diversity site as well as Women@KPMG and Disability@KPMG, enabling employees access to support networks and diversity resources as needed
  • created an Aboriginal task force in 2008 to focus on the recruitment of Aboriginal employees and targets First Nations educational institutions -- the Hamilton office recently partnered with the Martin Aboriginal Institute to provide mentoring to students
  • manages several people networks including the East Asian network and Hispanic Latin American Network, and Pride@KPMG, a network for LGBT employees
  • offers reciprocal mentoring that connects the firm's senior management with staff from diverse backgrounds, enabling both participants to assume roles of mentor and mentee
  • implemented a targeted recruitment strategy in 2007 to increase the number of women and visible minority employees by 10% over the next five years
"At KPMG, diversity is now part of our culture and we have many networks within the firm that demonstrate our ongoing commitment. One of these networks is the East Asian Network, which I am proud to be associated with. What amazes me about the network is that we share our individual experiences and learn from each other; however, more importantly, at the end of the day, we realize that as human beings we share many commonalities."
