KPMG LLP

KPMG LLP
Chosen as one of Canada's Best Diversity Employers for 2009:
By Rachel Caballero and Richard Yerema, Mediacorp Canada Inc. staff editors  (Feb 19, 2009)

Some of the reasons why KPMG LLP was selected as one of Canada's Best Diversity Employers 2009:
  • established a national Diversity Advisory Board that meets quarterly and acts as the advising body for KPMG's Canada-wide diversity, inclusion and equity strategy
  • have local diversity councils in Toronto, Montréal, Calgary, Vancouver (and some smaller offices) to address diversity issues relating to local offices
  • implemented a targeted recruitment strategy to increase the number of women and visible minority employees by 10% over the next five years
  • recently created an employee network group for employees who are parents of special needs children
  • developed a course on communication in a diverse workplace for managers, which is held once every month on an ongoing basis
  • introduced a Director of Diversity role to focus on the advancement of women and visible minorities, and combat workplace homophobia
  • has an in-house pride group (pride@KPMG) that publishes a quarterly newsletter to highlight networking events happening at offices across Canada

 Commitment to Diversity

At KPMG, a nationwide Diversity Advisory Board meets regularly throughout the year. Comprised of representatives from all levels and all regions of Canada, the group acts as an advisory board that guides the firm's national diversity inclusion and equity strategy. KPMG also has a full-time National Director of Diversity whose job duties include overseeing the firm's long-term diversity strategy, focusing on the advancement of women and visible minorities at the firm, and educating all employees on diversity and inclusiveness issues.

To manage diversity initiatives at the local level, KPMG has established Diversity Councils in its four national offices, located in Toronto, Montréal, Calgary and Vancouver. The councils spearhead diversity projects that address the needs of local offices, and are made up of employee representatives from all levels and offices within their regions.

 pride@KPMG

In 2005, KPMG established the pride@KPMG employee resource group. The group, which began as an informal gathering of LGBT employees a few years ago, has now grown into a company-wide initiative with active members in several offices across Canada. The pride@KPMG group distributes newsletters every quarter to notify members of networking and social events, and to share their experiences of working within the firm. The group also acts as a support network for employees who are working through the challenges of coming-out to their colleagues, friends and families.

The group is also very active in the larger LGBT community, sponsoring organizations such as the Gay and Lesbian Business Association of British Columbia, Calgary Cares, and le chambre du commerce gaie du Québec. Members also sponsor and support AIDS walks in various cities across Canada, as well as the annual pride festivals in Calgary, Halifax, Edmonton, Ottawa and Prince George.

"Having an employee network for the LGBT community, such as pride@kpmg, was a huge help for me coming out at work. It's a scary process and having the support and coaching of others who have 'been there and done that' is extremely comforting."
Chris Post, Partner in KPMG's Calgary, AB office
