Chosen as one of Canada's Best Diversity Employers for 2013:
By Kristina Leung and Richard Yerema, Mediacorp Canada Inc. staff editors   (Feb 18, 2013)

Some of the reasons why Manitoba Hydro was selected as one of Canada's Best Diversity Employers 2013:
  • established a recruitment and diversity department nearly thirty years ago, which is responsible for the creation of the organization's diversity plan as well as managing related initiatives
  • created a transitional employment program in partnership with SCE Lifeworks, a non-profit organization that helps high school students with intellectual disabilities gain meaningful employment -- Manitoba Hydro provides work placements for students in their last year of school
  • manages an Acquired Brain Injury program to help persons who have sustained severe brain injury reintegrate into the workforce -- the program recruits 1 to 4 participants per year and includes customized vocational assessment, training and job coaching
  • is currently developing an Aboriginal Sharing Circle to help Aboriginal employees connect and network, and also conducts career workshops in several Aboriginal communities to increase awareness of employment opportunities at Manitoba Hydro
  • manages pre-placement programs for Aboriginal applicants who do not meet the requirements of trade apprenticeship programs -- the program offers paid on-the-job training and mentoring
  • supports the University of Mantioba's Engineering Access Program and Aboriginal Business Education Program and recruits participating Aboriginal students for employment
  • hosted focus groups with female power electricians to solicit feedback on their experience in the workplace -- as a result, the organization created a formal mentoring program to pair trainees with experienced employees, a "Women in Trades Networking" website, and a developmental program to provide women with limited trades-related work experience to gain paid, on-the-job training required for the company's Power Electrician Training Program
  • in the past year, attended over 70 career events hosted by local community organizations including the Afro-Caribbean Association of Manitoba, Centre for Aboriginal Human Resource Development and the Manitoba Eastern Immigrant Services Career Fair, to name a few
"Our two Project SEARCH students really made our department a better place to work. They made us concentrate on the important things - communicating, tone, kindness and teamwork. It's very rare that anyone can affect a work group so positively, but these two did every day"
Zach R., Facilities Security and Administrative Supervisor
