McGill University
Chosen as one of Canada's Best Diversity Employers for 2009:
By Rachel Caballero and Richard Yerema, Mediacorp Canada Inc. staff editors  (Feb 19, 2009)

Some of the reasons why McGill University was selected as one of Canada's Best Diversity Employers 2009:
  • provides equity and diversity in the workplace training for supervisors
  • recently implemented a hiring project to recruit members of designated groups, especially Aboriginal and disabled individuals
  • offered training to supervisors and employees on how to integrate new deaf employees into workplace, which included a session on deaf culture, ASL, and other communication strategies

 Providing Diversity Training to Managers

McGill University hosts a workshop in cross-cultural communication designed to help employees recognize and understand cross-cultural issues in the workplace. The University also hosts information sessions on equity and diversity in the workplace for managers. All employees can attend diversity training, including sessions on how best to integrate new deaf employees into the workplace complete with educational sessions on deaf culture, American Sign Language (ASL) and other appropriate communication strategies.

 Recruiting Employees with Disabilities

McGill recruits disabled employees through partnerships with organizations such as le Comité d'adaptation de la main-d'oeuvre pour personnes handicapés. McGill also adapts workstations to accommodate employees with special needs, such as providing computer technology to help visually-impaired employees read, write and share documents easily.

"[When I started working at McGill] I did not feel out of place nor did I feel that my co-workers treated me differently...I was constantly reassured that the tools and training that I needed would be provided, and they were."
