Mount Sinai Hospital

Mount Sinai Hospital
Chosen as one of Canada's Best Diversity Employers for 2011:
By Kristina Leung and Richard Yerema, Mediacorp Canada Inc. staff editors  ( Feb 21, 2011)

Some of the reasons why Mount Sinai Hospital was selected as one of Canada's Best Diversity Employers 2011:
  • established a diversity and human rights office to manage and oversee the hospital's diversity policy and goals
  • also maintains a diversity and human rights committee, which recently conducted focus groups to determine how employees from marginalized groups experienced the work environment -- the committee is currently working to improve diversity and inclusion in the workplace based on the report's recommendations
  • created an internal award in recognition of employees who champion diversity and inclusion awareness within the organization
  • the hospital's Anti-Homophobia/Transphobia committee recently drafted a policy to provide equal access, inclusion, and support, to staff and patients
  • operates an in-house Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act Planning Committee to facilitate accessibility and accommodation initiatives
  • requires hiring managers and supervisors to complete fair employment opportunities training, a half-day course on equitable selection process
  • also requires new hires to complete a full day of diversity and human rights training within the first year of employment in addition to mandatory cultural competency training
  • has partnered with the "Summer Mentorship" program for over ten years, to provide mentoring placements to 16 black and Aboriginal high school students for three weeks
"Mount Sinai Hospital's commitment to diversity extends throughout all levels of the organization. By integrating the talents, skills, and experiences of diverse staff, Mount Sinai Hospital is able to create a rich and dynamic work environment where diversity is incorporated into the organization's planning and practice."
Simone A., employee
"Being a member of the Diversity & Human Rights Committee at Mount Sinai Hospital means being part of a dynamic and inclusive group of staff from nearly every area of the hospital, pulling together to recognize, strategize and prioritize equity in our workplace...When you are included, validated, educated and feel protected as a staff member or as a patient, you have one less mountain of discrimination to climb in your daily life. You see change is possible. And that is truly empowering. That is the essence of diversity & human rights at Mount Sinai Hospital."
