Chosen as one of Canada's Best Diversity Employers for 2013:
By Kristina Leung and Richard Yerema, Mediacorp Canada Inc. staff editors   (Feb 18, 2013)

Some of the reasons why Mount Sinai Hospital was selected as one of Canada's Best Diversity Employers 2013:
  • recently renamed its diversity and human rights office and committee to the human rights and health equity office and committee, responsible for the equity of staff, patients and families
  • created a gender identity policy to provide guidelines for staff on the treatment of trans and intersex members of the community
  • also launched the "Being an Ally" campaign to educate the workforce on how to act as an ally and resource for persons with mental health issues, addictions, disabilities or members of the LGBT community
  • the hospital also manages an Anti Homophobia-Transphobia Action (AHA) subcommittee, which is responsible for creating a welcoming environment for LGBT staff and patients -- the committee hosts monthly meetings and recently consulted on the Ally campaign and gender identity policy
  • operates an in-house Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act Planning Committee to facilitate accessibility and accommodation initiatives -- the hospital also forwards vacancies to the Job Opportunity Information Network (JOIN) and participates in their annual career fair
  • has partnered with the "Summer Mentorship" program for over ten years, to provide mentoring placements to 16 black and Aboriginal high school students for three weeks
  • created an internal award in recognition of employees who champion diversity and inclusion awareness within the organization
  • recently established a committee to address discrimination against persons with mental health issues and addictions, and is also working in partnership with students from Ryerson University on "Bridging Minds", a series of interactive art installations to education the broader community on the experience of mental health issues
"Mount Sinai's Human Rights and Health Equity [department] creates an environment of belonging and learning for staff and physicians. For example I attend the Lunch and Learn's where guest speakers will share their stories and knowledge. Also it's a place where culture and health issues are celebrated. For example Black history month, Heart month, Lunar New Year where displays are set up and staffed in the main lobby. All of this adds to the richness of working at Mount Sinai."
Perry F., Employee
"At Mount Sinai Hospital Diversity and inclusion are at the core of our corporate values. As a result employees feel they have a voice and are empowered to act to uphold these values. Diversity and inclusion are just words without action or feeling if not fostered to develop a relationship of trust and respect between each employee and the institution. This has enabled each employee to trust that if they speak they will be heard and valued with action taken where appropriate."
Maria M., Manager, Pathology and Lab Medicine
