  • maintains an employment equity plan that outlines the company's goals, including increasing workforce representation of designated groups and reviewing current policies and practices to ensure a barrier and discrimination free work environment
  • established the "Women's Leadership Network" to support the advancement of female employees and hosted a national conference, "Women in Leadership", that featured speakers from other businesses and not-for-profit organizations
  • based on the success of the Women's Leadership Network, established a formal diversity committee to champion diversity and inclusion in multiple arenas
  • also created a mentoring program for female employees and partnered with the Calgary Immigrant Women's Association (CIWA) to provide a ten-week work placement opportunity to a CIWA member
  • based on the success of the mentoring program, created a similar initiative to provide mentoring to students from Woodland Cree Cadotte Lake School and new Canadians, through partnerships with community organizations
  • in association with ECO Canada, created a post-secondary scholarship program for Aboriginal students -- scholarship recipients are invited to Calgary for an awards ceremony and meet with Newalta employees in the area of their career interest -- the company will also recipients with a mentor from the company as well as with a mentor of Aboriginal descent
