To make the recrutiment process more comfortable for jobseekers with disabilities, the Ontario Public Service (OPS) developed a recruitment training workshop for managers on how to recruit people with disabilities into the public service. The goal of these workshops is to identify and eliminate the barriers faced by disabled individuals during the recruitment process.
The OPS also reaches out to disabled jobseekers by distributing recruitment brochures to more than 200 community agencies that serve disabled workers. The brochures inform disabled jobseekers about the OPS recruitment process, including its commitment to meet any candidate's accommodation requirements at all stages of the job selection process.
OPS managers must complete mandatory training on the Ontarians with Disabilities Act to ensure that they properly address the needs of disabled employees. The Service has also created the Accessibility Awareness toolkit for managers, which includes general guidance on how to make meetings accessible and provide examples of a typical accessible workplace.
"The OPS has provided me with the accommodation I need to do my job for more than 20 years. Whether it was equipment, renovations for accessibility, or support from a
workplace attendant, the OPS willingly addressed my accommodation needs...The OPS is a place where I have been enabled to do demanding, interesting work that matters. For me, the OPS is the place to work!"
