Ontario Public Service
OPS Pride Network Launch
OPS Pride Network Launch
Chosen as one of Canada's Best Diversity Employers for 2011:
By Kristina Leung and Richard Yerema, Mediacorp Canada Inc. staff editors  ( Feb 21, 2011)

Some of the reasons why Ontario Public Service was selected as one of Canada's Best Diversity Employers 2011:
  • established a diversity office in 2008 to oversee the development of diversity and inclusion programs, including training for employees, and a year later, released a formal three-year diversity plan
  • within the past year, piloted the OPS Inclusion Lens, an online tool to help identify potential barriers in policy and program development, and service delivery
  • OPS' pride network recently launched a positive space campaign to support the creation of a welcoming workplace and to encourage employees to bring their "whole self" to work
  • created a "quiet room" at head office to help meet employees' religious and spiritual needs
  • manages internal awards to recognize employee excellence in championing diversity and inclusion initiatives
  • in addition to diversity related commitments in performance contracts, all deputy ministers are engaged in reciprocal mentoring with members of under represented groups in management or senior roles
  • this program was recently expanded to include assistant deputy ministers and directors, demonstrating a commitment to diversity at the highest levels
  • offers support for female employees through the "Women of Influence and Inspiration Program", a day-long seminar that provides women with opportunities to network and share their individual stories
  • introduced a new training course to educate managers on the removal of employment barriers in the recruitment process
  • initiated an inclusion index to complement employee engagement, measuring employees' perception of OPS as an inclusive employer
  • in partnership with Ability Edge, provides paid 9-month internships to persons with disabilities and also forwards job vacancies to Equitek to ensure that positions reach a large group of applicants
"I had the opportunity to participate in a 'Using a Wheelchair for the Day' event in the workplace as part of our OPS Diversity focus. It opened my eyes to the barriers and challenges faced by those who use a wheelchair. It reminded me of the importance of keeping accessibility in mind as we go about our work activities."
