Royal Bank of Canada

Royal Bank of Canada
Chosen as one of Canada's Best Diversity Employers for 2009:
By Rachel Caballero and Richard Yerema, Mediacorp Canada Inc. staff editors  (Feb 20, 2009)

Some of the reasons why Royal Bank of Canada was selected as one of Canada's Best Diversity Employers 2009:
  • maintains a diversity leadership council that meets four times per year to review the bank's diversity initiatives
  • recruits disabled and Aboriginal employees through a special diversity recruitment program
  • provides paid internships to disabled individuals through the Ability Edge program
  • operates employee resource groups for Aboriginal, LGBT, disabled and visible minority employees

 Creating Opportunities for Disabled Canadians

Launched in 2007, RBC's in-house "Pursue Your Potential" recruitment program was established to help attract qualified candidates who are living with disabilities. The bank also partners with the "Ability Edge" program, providing paid internships to recent graduates with disabilities. Through these two programs, RBC has recruited nearly 300 disabled employees, and created work opportunities for more than 15 college and university graduates with disabilities.

 Diversity Training for Employees

RBC provides a wide variety of training programs to help employees learn how to create inclusive workplace environments, including a series of intensive workshops on how to anticipate and accommodate the needs of disabled co-workers. The bank also provides a variety of unique self-study materials that are available to all employees through an intranet web-portal called "Destination Diversity".

"I started my career at RBC six years ago and was fortunate to work under managers that provided me with the tools and motivation to explore my full potential. They helped me open doors so I could grow in the company, regardless of my ethnic background or colour...I joined MOSAIC [a RBC employee resource group for Visible Minorities and Newcomers to Canada] in the hope that I can give back the support I have received in the past."
Fritz Charles-Antoine, RBC Client Care Manager and MOSAIC committee member
