Saskatchewan Government Insurance / SGI

Saskatchewan Government Insurance / SGI
Chosen as one of Canada's Best Diversity Employers for 2009:
By Rachel Caballero and Richard Yerema, Mediacorp Canada Inc. staff editors  (Feb 20, 2009)

Some of the reasons why Saskatchewan Government Insurance was selected as one of Canada's Best Diversity Employers 2009:
  • created an in-house steering committee dedicated to Aboriginal issues as part of their employment equity program
  • developed an Aboriginal recruitment strategy, creating employment partnerships with the Saskatchewan Indian Institute of Technologies (SIIT), and developing an internal program to advance the careers of Aboriginal employees
  • sets diversity goals every year, and measures managers' success at meeting diversity objectives through a monthly reporting and performance appraisal process
  • established an Aboriginal Advisory Network where Aboriginal employees can share concerns and seek career development advice and counseling from their peers
  • focuses on recruitment diversity from the start -- more than half of last year's summer students were members of equity groups

 Supporting Aboriginal Employees

Saskatchewan Government Insurance (SGI) manages an in-house internship program for Aboriginal candidates, providing interns work experience in areas such as risk evaluation, underwriting, business analysis, community relations, accounting and human resources. The company also provides work placements to students in the Work and Learning Program at the Saskatchewan Indian Institute of Technologies, recruiting recent graduates in fields such as finance and information systems.

Established more than 10 years ago, SGI's Aboriginal Advisory Network functions as a support network for Aboriginal employees. Members of the Aboriginal Advisory Network receive career counselling from Aboriginal colleagues trained in career development, participate in company-wide initiatives to promote awareness of Aboriginal culture, and advise on the development of retention strategies for Aboriginal employees.

Recognizing that Aboriginal employees may prefer traditional options when faced with personal or family crisis, SGI provides counselling from Aboriginal counsellors or Elders as part of their employee and family assistance program.
