University of British Columbia
Chosen as one of Canada's Best Diversity Employers for 2009:
By Rachel Caballero and Richard Yerema, Mediacorp Canada Inc. staff editors  (Feb 19, 2009)

Some of the reasons why University of British Columbia was selected as one of Canada's Best Diversity Employers 2009:
  • operates an equipment accommodation fund for disabled employees to meet the needs of disabled faculty and staff, and to facilitate the recruitment of persons with disabilities
  • is taking steps to increase the diversity of their faculty by instructing recruiters to: ensure language in job ads does not exclude applicants from equity groups; to interview a diverse range of applicants; and to determine whether equity groups are adequately represented in present faculty
  • requires managers and supervisors to attend a one-day training program in bias-free interviewing
  • manages an equity enhancement fund to provide grants for diversity projects at UBC, including a workshop on the relationship between equity and the globalization of the labour market

 Accommodating Disabled Employees

The University of British Columbia (UBC) maintains an equipment accommodation fund to subsidize the cost of adaptive technologies that disabled employees may require to perform their jobs. The fund also helps UBC accommodate jobseekers with disabilities during the interview and selection phases, helping to ensure the recruitment process is as equitable as possible for all candidates.

 Integrating Diversity into Faculty Recruitment

UBC also publishes an extensive faculty recruitment guide to ensure all of its departments hire with diversity in mind. The guide encourages departments to assess the makeup of their present faculty, use inclusive language when writing employment advertisements, review employment applications from a wide range of candidates, and recognize candidates who have obtained their qualifications and experience in non-traditional ways.
