University of Toronto
Chosen as one of Canada's Best Diversity Employers for 2011:
By Kristina Leung and Richard Yerema, Mediacorp Canada Inc. staff editors  ( Feb 21, 2011)

Some of the reasons why University of Toronto was selected as one of Canada's Best Diversity Employers 2011:
  • appointed a vice president of human resources and equity to develop and manage the university's diversity and equity programs
  • tracks workforce representation through annual reports that measure the recruitment, retention, and promotion of designated employee groups
  • the Status of Women office recently launched the "Acts of Daily Excellence" initiative, highlighting the achievements of female staff, faculty, and students
  • established an Aboriginal initiatives committee in 2009, comprised of Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal staff and faculty who meet monthly to discuss programs that support the recruitment and retention of employees of Aboriginal descent
  • committee members recently partnered with the university's career centre and held a resume and mock interview clinic to support the employment efforts of Aboriginal graduates
  • forwards job vacancies to community organizations that support the employment efforts of Aboriginals, and have developed partnerships with Aboriginal centres, such as the Aboriginal Friendship centre in Toronto
  • manages a Sexual and Gender Diversity office to promote awareness of LGBT issues and recently established an employee resource group for LGBT staff, providing employees with an opportunity to network and share their experiences within the university
  • also engages in a campus-wide positive space campaign to promote the creation of an inclusive space
"As both a visible minority and sexual minority, it is extremely important for me to work for an employer that values and celebrates diversity. The University of Toronto is a fantastic place to work. It is clear to me that UofT works hard to build a working culture of excellence and mutual respect."
Brian T., Leaders of Tomorrow Program
