Some of the reasons why Bayer Inc. was selected as one of Canada's Greenest Employers (2011):
established an in-house employee "Green Matters Team" that reviews and manages environmental initiatives, including Earth Day celebrations in the spring and Environment Week in the fall
the Green Matters Team has also taken responsibility for the company's "Operation Zero Waste" program, with the goal of diverting 80% of its waste from the landfill through aggressive recycling efforts
actively encourages employees from all departments to become "Green Matters Ambassadors" for a full-year term
has introduced a number of small and large energy saving undertakings, including the introduction of LED bulbs in office light fixtures, computer-controlled lighting and heating systems, using 100% post-consumer recycled paper (saving 865 trees per year), and conducting environmental audits of all facilities
embarked on a tree and vegetation planting campaign to "re-naturalize" and create a walking trail on its head office property -- recently partnering with a local junior school, the Toronto Region Conservation Authority and the Partners in Project Green initiative to plant native wildflower species on the property
constructed 10,000 square feet of green roof space at the head office, and was the first organization in the west Toronto industrial neighbourhood to do so -- the roof not only absorbs CO2 from the atmosphere but also lowers the company's air conditioning and heating bills
the company makes hybrid, diesel and lower emission vehicles available as part of its car fleet, and even provides incentives to encourage employees to select hybrid models
the company has entered into a long term partnership with the United Nations Environmental Program (UNEP), which is designed to encourage partnerships in environmental stewardship and help people and their nations improve quality of life without compromising future generations
