Perkins Will Canada's head office
Chosen as one of Canada's Greenest Employers for 2013:
By Richard Yerema and Julien Gagnier, Mediacorp Canada Inc. staff editors
(Apr 21, 2013)
Some of the reasons why Perkins+Will Canada Corporation was selected as one of Canada's Greenest Employers (2013):
- maintains an in-house "Green Operations Plan" to ensure that its facilities and day-to-day operations are conducted in an environmentally responsible manner -- from monitoring water and energy use (in real time) and hosting a firm-wide recycle and reuse competition (with offices competing for the highest diversion rate), to providing transit subsidies and secure bike storage with shower facilities for its employees (95 percent of head office employees ride, walk, take transit or carpool to work)
- offsets all transportation and operating carbon emissions using the "Climate Smart" tool and introduced a waste-free policy for all catering services
- the Vancouver office has implemented many environmental initiatives that have been taken across the firm, including a "Pass the Trash" competition that recognizes the office with the highest diversion rate; a composting program complete with manual and resource guide that's been emulated at the majority of the firm's offices; and the Perkin + Wills Energy Cup competition, which is a unique online competition that pits virtual office race cars against one another, the more power saved the further the race car travels
- has completed 110 Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certified projects and has over 200 LEED registered projects -- and has committed itself to the "2030 Challenge", pledging that all of its projects will be designed as carbon neutral by the year 2030
- as part of Atlanta, Georgia-based Perkins+Will, the firm has over 900 LEED-accredited professionals worldwide, many of whom are called upon to provide lectures and presentations advocating sustainable design -- over 75 percent of its worldwide professional staff and over 95 percent of Vancouver staff are LEED accredited
- the firm's Managing Director, Peter Busby, was a founding member and past Chair of the Canada Green Building Council and was instrumental in bringing the LEED rating system to Canada -- and today, the firm looks for candidates who are LEED accredited professionals, and if they are not, encourages them to become so within three months of hire
- boast many firsts in its industry, including designing the first LEED Platinum-certified multi-family residential building in North America, the first LEED Platinum certified new building in the world and the first LEED Gold Certified new building in Canada
- and has pushed beyond LEED with two projects currently being designed to follow the "Living Building Challenge" as defined by the International Living Future Institute, which is a standard set to ensure that buildings have a net positive impact on their surroundings
