Some of the reasons why Christie Digital Systems Canada, Inc. was selected as one of Canada's Greenest Employers (2011):
with encouragement from its Japan-based parent company, Christie Digital began developing its first "environmental management system" in 2006 to review the impacts of its business activities -- and in 2007, the company received ISO14001 certification, which is an internationally recognized standard for progressive environmental management systems
the company also follows the "Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment" (WEEE) directive, which ensures that customers can return end-of-life products for proper recycling
since the development of its environmental management system, the company has undertaken a number of energy saving initiatives, including new HVAC equipment purchase program, an illumination audit to reduce excess lighting and a heat recovery system that diverts previously wasted heat generated from its manufacturing processes into heat for its shipping department
is currently upgrading its washroom facilities and installing fixtures that will use less water
the company recently replaced all personal waste bins with personal blue boxes and set-up centralized recycling, waste and organics collection stations throughout the office -- achieving an impressive 80 percent waste diversion rate and diverting approximately 21 metric tonnes of waste from the landfill
has also established an e-waste recycling program to ensure that all of its electronic waste is diverted from landfill and is recycled and disposed of properly -- and welcome e-waste from employees' homes
recently installed additional bicycle racks to encourage self-propelled commuting (with shower facilities onsite) and offers preferred parking for employees who participate in the company's car-pooling system
employee volunteers operate their own in-house "Green Team" who promote environmental activities to their fellow employees -- hosting lunch hour lectures throughout the year, on everything from solar heating to gardening to electric bicycles, as well as an annual Earth Day educational event that includes a range of exhibits and displays to inspire greater environmental awareness
production workers have moved to a standard 4-day workweek, working the same hours but able to skip one full day of commuting to work (as well as enjoying longer weekends)
the company has introduced energy-efficient stand-by modes for many of its new projector models, continues to pioneer the next generation LED illumination technology to reduce operational energy consumption of its projectors -- and is working the Environmental Protection Agency in the Untied States to create an Energy Star certification standard for all projection devices
