Chosen as one of Canada's Greenest Employers for 2010:
By Richard Yerema, Mediacorp Canada Inc. staff editor (Apr 21, 2010)
Some of the reasons why Compass Group Canada was selected as one of Canada's Greenest Employers (2010):
appointed a Director of Sustainability in 2007 to plan and oversee the company's environmentally-sustainable initiatives -- who is supported by in-house volunteer ambassadors (called the Green Lanterns Committee) who help guide the company's many initiatives at locations across Canada
developed a sustainable seafood sourcing policy in 2008 through a partnership agreement with "Ocean Wise", which is the Vancouver Aquarium Conservation program -- the policy commits Compass to shift from one unsustainable species to a sustainable species every six months
the company is also working alongside the Canadian Parks and Wilderness Society, the David Suzuki Foundation, Ecology in Action and the Sierra Club of BC as part of the "SeaChoice" initiative to help increase awareness about sustainable seafood choices
has developed a formal program for sourcing food locally where possible, working with "EatBC" and "Foodland Ontario" as well as local farmers, artisans and bakeries across the country
recently added "Fair Trade Certified" coffee to menus across Canada and has begun switching to "Green-Seal" certified environmentally friendly cleaning products
has introduced a number of customer-friendly initiatives to reduce waste and encourage conservation and recycling, including loyalty programs (ie. free meals and coffee) to encourage use of china versus disposable plates and cups, use of bulk condiment dispensers, single napkin dispensers and large easy-to-understand restaurant recycling bins
recently developed a partnership with Rothsay, a division of Maple Leaf Foods, to collect used cooking oil for its conversion to biodiesel for converted vehicles -- approximately 165,000 kg of used oil will be converted annually with a percentage of the revenues generated donated to the Kids Help Phone
