Some of the reasons why Corus Entertainment Inc. was selected as one of Canada's Greenest Employers (2013):
recently constructed a new head office building on Toronto's waterfront that is targeting Leadership in Energy and Environmental (LEED) Gold certification -- the building features numerous state-of-the-art features such as a unique "daylight harvesting" lighting system that automatically reduces the light levels to take advantage of natural sunlight, green rooftop sections that's usable by employees, and an interior five-storey "bio-wall" that is home to abundant plant life that naturally cleans and filters the air
every month, the company receives waste diversion reports focused on carbon dioxide emissions, water conservation as well as waste and recycling efforts -- impressively, the company measured significant reductions across all categories
has an in-house employee-led "Green Team" that includes employees from all divisions and departments within the company
the employee team has been busy in a number of areas, from conducting energy audits to reviewing power, lighting and overall energy consumption to ensuring the purchase of recycled products where possible -- impressively, the Green Team is accredited with helping the company's Facilities Department save energy and reduce the head office's operational costs
as part of its efforts to mitigate its operational impacts, the company recently installed low-flow water fixtures to complement the building's existing rainwater collection system, has reduced its printer inventory from 240 to just over 50 environmentally friendly printers, and has even moved to electronic payment and filing systems to significantly reduce its paper consumption
the company also works with Artex Environmental Corporation to ensure that all its end-of-life electronic equipment is properly recycled, versus being sent to the landfill
