Some of the reasons why ENMAX Corporation was selected as one of Canada's Greenest Employers (2013):
- employees manage their own environmental educational initiative, called "Grassroots", which hosts regular lunch hour seminars covering a range of topics from hooking-up grid connected solar arrays to building net-zero energy homes
- is a leading public advocate for energy conservation as well as alternative energy production and micro generation through its "Generate Choice" program, helping customers install solar panels, micro-wind turbines (in rural areas), and a unique electric car pilot program for its employees -- with four employees testing electric cars
- also encourages employees to install alternative energy systems in their homes through an "Eco-Rebate" program (and become ambassadors in the wider community) such as solar panels, solar hot water systems and micro wind generation
- has tracked its greenhouse gas emissions since 2004 and today maintains an "Environmental Affairs" department that is comprised of six employees who are responsible for overseeing the company environmental management programs
- has an established Environmental Management System (based on the ISO140001 EMS standard) that provides a framework for managing all environmental aspects of its business operations
- incorporated a thoughtful green procurement policy into its overall purchasing policy, ensuring that environmental impacts are considered in all purchase decisions and incorporates a longer term analysis to determine the actual cost of the products and services
- introduced a unique "EcoPlege" program that encourages employees to commit to specific actions that reduce their own environmental footprints, with a focus on waste and water usage reduction, energy usage, and overall environmental awareness
- has established the long-term goal to expand its power generating capacity with lower and non-emitting technologies (versus the currently dominate coal) -- the company already operates one of Alberta's largest wind energy farms that includes 37 wind turbines that generates enough energy to power approximately 32,000 homes (80 megawatts)
- introduced an idle-free zone policy asking drivers to turn off their engines (for both employees and the general public) with signage posted at company facilities around the city
