Some of the reasons why Hewlett-Packard (Canada) Co. was selected as one of Canada's Greenest Employers (2009):
is an environmental pioneer in its industry, recycling hundreds of million pounds of used computer equipment and ink cartridges since 1987 and providing a practical model for other manufacturers of disposable electronic equipment
sponsors "Waste Reduction Week", with employees volunteering to collect discarded electronics at the University of Waterloo last year -- over 6,800 kg were collected and sent to HP's recycling facility in Brampton
as part of Earth Day last year employees collected and recycled over 46,000 kg of old electronics from their homes and company offices
provides free employee recycling depots at its office locations for batteries, mobile phones, rechargeable batteries, ink and laser jet cartridges, and CDs
has funded the employee-led "HP Sustainability Network" since 1998, which supports educational, networking and sustainable practice initiatives for employees across the company
encourages employees to leave their cars at home by staying home themselves through a longstanding commitment to telecommuting -- and even provides preferred parking for carpoolers and shower facilities for bicycle commuters at some locations
the head office is situated on 18 acres of land adjacent to an environmentally-protected ravine, where the company planted more than 26,000 trees and shrubs to enhance the surrounding woodlands
inside, the head office also features motion-sensitive lighting to conserve energy
recently established the "HP Green Advocates" program to educate employee volunteers who attend quarterly training seminars and disseminate environmental information across the company, as well as to HP customers
