Some of the reasons why Hydro Ottawa Ltd. was selected as one of Canada's Greenest Employers (2011):
the company's environmental management system has been certified to ISO14001 since 2004 -- and in 2009, the utility began the process of developing an updated "Environmental Sustainability Strategy" to address the environmental impacts of its operations, including energy consumption, air pollution, greenhouse gases, water and waste disposal
has now begun implementing recommendations to reduce the utility's carbon footprint, including improvements in fleet operations (from a reduced idling policy to the purchase of new hybrid trucks), non-hazardous waste management and recycling at its facilities, and the development of an updated procurement policy
manages a unique Christmas seasonal light exchange program for its employees -- providing one string of energy efficient LED light strings for every two old incandescent string returned
recently installed two large solar panel arrays at two of its facilities to generate power and has installed automatic light sensors in appropriate areas of its facilities
is a strong advocate of conservation in the National Capital, developing an in-house "Companies for Conservation" awards program to encourage it customers to reduce their own environmental footprints
and is also a major sponsor of the "Aim for Zero Footprint" initiative, which hosted over 150,000 people and included an environmental fair and green lecture series (with over 25 speakers and 50 exhibitors) and the unique "Buy Local Barbecue Challenge"
also has an in-house conservation team heads out into the community to spread the conservation word, visiting local elementary schools, customer sites and public events throughout the year
