Some of the reasons why Hydro Ottawa Limited was selected as one of Canada's Greenest Employers (2013):
- the company's environmental management system has been certified to ISO14001 since 2004 -- and in 2009 the Utility developed an updated five year "Environmental Sustainability Strategy" to address the environmental impacts of its operations and focused around three primary areas, including carbon footprint reduction; green procurement and supply-chain management; and building a culture of environmental sustainability across the organization
- also has an in-house "Conservation Team" that heads out into the community to spread the conservation word, visiting 33 local elementary schools and participating in over 110 public and private events last year
- has an ongoing program to green its fleet, from a reduced idling policy to replacing vehicles with hybrid and more efficient vehicles where available -- and recently added a Chevy Volt electric car to its growing green fleet
- has ongoing programs underway to reduce its carbon footprint in other areas, including non-hazardous waste management and recycling at its facilities, donating used computers to Computers for Schools (and properly disposes of obsolete equipment), and has updated its supplier procurement policy to include environmental considerations
- and continues to do the little things that make a big difference over time, including the elimination of bottled water at meetings, use of green cleaning products, elimination of styrofoam cups (and discounted coffee for those with their own mugs) and a steady increase in use of electronic documents and communications as well as electronic billing and monitoring services for customers through the company's "MyHydroLink" program
- also encourages its residential customers to upgrade to more energy efficient appliances through available incentives as well as its longstanding "Fridge & Freezer Pick Up" program -- over 26,000 customers have used this program
- the utility operates three "EcoLogo" certified (a Federal government program) hydro-electric generating stations along the Ottawa River, has installed two large solar panel arrays at two of its facilities and produces electricity through a unique landfill gas-to-energy generating station (with a second facility under construction)
- is a strong advocate of conservation in the nations' capital, developing an in-house "Companies for Conservation" awards program to encourage customers to reduce their own environmental footprints
