Some of the reasons why IBM Canada Ltd. was selected as one of Canada's Greenest Employers (2009):
received the Building Owners and Managers Association (BOMA) Go Green Plus certification for its Markham facility (BOMA Go Green Plus is a Canadian award for existing structures that is determined through a review of building performance measurements in energy usage, water consumption, office waste, emissions -- from heating controls to hazardous materials, indoor work environment and environmental management initiatives)
is a founding member of "Smart Commute 404-7", an initiative that advocates responsible commuting and aims to reduce the number of single-occupant vehicles in its rapidly growing suburban neighbourhood
has an employee cycling club (called BUG) that encourages other employees to cycle to and from their workplace -- and IBM was one of the first firms to install shower and changing facilities for those taking self-propelled transportation
also an early pioneer in developing an international telecommuting network that has helped to redefine where and how IBM employees work, eliminating needless commutes and tonnes of CO2 emissions along the way
provided its Bromont, Québec employees with 2,000 trees last year to promote its in-house recycling programs
