Some of the reasons why Loblaw Companies Limited was selected as one of Canada's Greenest Employers (2011):
has constructed an environmental flagship store in Toronto that meets Leadership and Energy and Environmental (LEED) design, utilizing motion-activated lighting in coolers, state-of-the-art low-temperature refrigerant for coolers and reclaiming waste heat energy for heating the store -- and recently opened its first LEED designed distribution centre in Surrey, British Columbia
has committed itself to diverting 70 percent of its in-store waste from the landfill and has a number of impressive initiatives at stores across the country, including: redirecting used cooking oil for use as biodiesel; composting of organic waste (onsite) and the subsequent production of methane gas for use as an energy source; and plastic bag free stores (in favour of reusable and the branded "PC Green" reusable boxes)
as part of an ongoing program to continually address waste generated, the company is currently testing a non-waxed cardboard box option (waxed produce boxes are not recyclable) and accepted over three million returned plastic flower pots and flats from customers last year for recycling as part of a new collection initiative
building on 20 years of President's Choice Green products, the company recently introduced five new Green label products last year -- bringing the total number of products to 44 earth-friendly products for consumers
continues to build on its unique (and now familiar) "Grown Close to Home" campaign that promotes local produce through the months of July and August
in response to growing awareness and public concern, the company has introduced new Fair-Trade certified products and launched an impressive Sustainable Seafood Commitment to ensure that 100% of all seafood sold in its stores is sourced from sustainable sources by the end of 2013 -- currently offers 16 seafood products that are certified by the Marine Stewardship Council
recently completed applications to install rooftop solar panels store locations in Ontario -- working in partnership with the Province of Ontario's feed-in-tariff (FIT) program which offers premium and stable prices for renewable power
