Chosen as one of Canada's Greenest Employers for 2009:
By Richard Yerema, Mediacorp Canada Inc. staff editor (Apr 16, 2009)
Some of the reasons why McGill University was selected as one of Canada's Greenest Employers (2009):
established an Environmental Officer and the "Rethink McGill" strategy encouraging employees, faculty and students to explore ways to reduce the university's energy consumption (in keeping with the province's mandate to see a 14% energy decrease from 2003 levels by the year 2011)
has increased the use of recycled-content paper from zero to 33% of paper used in daily operations, eliminated paper telephone directories, and expanded its on-campus recycling program -- all in the past two years
has updated its policy to eliminate unnecessary pesticide use, and recently established a bicycle lending program at its suburban Macdonald campus
installed a state-of-the-art geothermal heating system as part of a recent building renovation
is a member of the Canada Green Building Council and has ongoing initiatives to incorporate new "green" building standards into its building operations, renovations and new construction
