Chosen as one of Canada's Greenest Employers for 2013:

Some of the reasons why National Capital Commission / NCC was selected as one of Canada's Greenest Employers (2013):
- adopted a formal green strategy ("Building a Greener Capital") and recently revised its policy on general procurement to include environmental considerations
- is introducing a number of energy saving features at properties around the Capital, from the introduction of LED light bulbs to the drilling of a 150 metre test well at Rideau Hall to evaluate the feasibility of geothermal heating and cooling
- recently celebrated "Earth Day" by planting 30 trees at Rideau Hall -- the planning for this event was put together by members of an in-house "Green Team" that was established back in 2009
- the Green Team also manages a number of events and initiatives, including: an "Enviro Info" section on the corporate intranet; volunteering for "Spring Cleaning the Capital" (employees and their family members collected over 1,000 pounds of waste in a single day last year); a new "ECOmobility" project to review work-related transportation issues
- recently conducted a waste audit that highlighted its success in diverting 70 percent of all waste from the landfill, organizing new waste stations in all of its office buildings that separate garbage, compost, paper, glass, metal, plastics and batteries -- also organized a composting program for concession stands along the Rideau Canal Skateway and for the city's Winterlude festival
- as a result of recommendations made by employees to Senior Management, pay slips are made available in strictly electronic format and old printers, faxes, scanners and photocopiers have been replaced with centralized multi-function machines, further reducing paper usage
- recently decreased its head office parking area by three spaces and increased its number of bicycle racks in its garage, thereby allowing approximately 56 additional employees to ride their bikes to work and to securely park them free of charge -- is also a sponsor of the new Captial BIXI bike-sharing program in Ottawa and is conducting a pilot program to make 10 parking areas available on the city's periphery that let people park their cars and commute into the city on over 230 kilometres of bike trails
