Chosen as one of Canada's Greenest Employers for 2013:
By Richard Yerema and Julien Gagnier, Mediacorp Canada Inc. staff editors

Some of the reasons why Nature's Path Foods Inc. was selected as one of Canada's Greenest Employers (2013):
- the company hosts mandatory sustainability training for all new employees (current employees are also welcome to attend for a refresher) where employees are tasked to develop a list of sustainability initiatives that can be undertaken -- employees recently led an initiative to update a cafeteria's recycling program after identifying areas for improvement
- employees maintain a large organic staff garden with composting bins and an outdoor eating area, which was constructed and is maintained by employees throughout the growing season
- recently completed its first Sustainable Supply Chain survey and very much set the standard for advocating long-term environmental stewardship with its suppliers -- as a certified organic producer, the company works directly with other certified organic suppliers, verified non-GMO product suppliers, purchases Fair-Trade cocoa powder, Eco-Social certified palm products and sugar cane, as well as sourcing suppliers located as close to its manufacturing facilities as is feasible -- and developed its first Fair Trade-certified product in 2012
- has a full-time Director of Human Resources and Sustainability who oversees the implementation of initiatives outlined in the company's formal "Declaration of Sustainability"
- the company has set the ambitious goal of becoming carbon neutral by 2020 and has purchased Renewable Energy Credits (since 2009) to offset energy consumed -- and has recently undertaken three energy saving projects toward this goal, including lighting retrofits, installation of a pre-heated water condensate recapture and reuse system, and the introduction of low-energy infra-red oven technology
- is working towards 99 percent waste diversion from the landfill by 2014 through a variety of measures, including extensive recycling of waste material, re-use of equipment where possible, and food waste diversion to compost (and as a feed source for local farmers) -- impressively, the company has already achieved diversion rates up to 92 percent
- the company made the simple step to reduce the size of its cereal box packaging by 10 percent, which allows trucks to carry more product and has led to reductions in fuel consumption per product shipped -- and has since introduced bulk packaging to further reduce packaging requirements
- the company also has a longstanding program to donate one percent of the sales of its EnviroKidz product line to environmental education, habitat conservation and species conservation programs
