By Richard Yerema, Mediacorp Canada Inc. staff editor (Apr 16, 2009)
Some of the reasons why New Flyer Industries Canada ULC was selected as one of Canada's Greenest Employers (2009):
is a leading advocate for mass transportation, introducing new bus designs for mass transit providers across North America that incorporate electric trolley, clean diesel and hybrid technologies
maintains extensive metal recycling initiatives as part of its manufacturing process, recycling over 850 tonnes of aluminum, copper, steel and stainless steel last year
recently set industrial waste reduction targets for all its facilities, achieving a 5% reduction in 2008
has also set targets to reduce and recycle hazardous wastes, wood pallets, used oil products and cardboard
has an in-house Environmental Coordinator who oversees the company's in-house initiatives, which include establishing an employee car pool program (with preferred parking for car poolers) and developing a number of energy savings strategies, from shutting down unused computers and lights to reviewing manufacturing processes
has recently developed, in partnership with Minnesota-based Engineered Machine Products Inc., a new thermal cooling system for diesel and natural gas engines (called the Mini-Hybrid Thermal Cooling System) that helps to increase overall mileage and thus generate lower emissions through normal operations
