Some of the reasons why Rescan Environmental Services Ltd. was selected as one of Canada's Greenest Employers (2011):
operates an employee-led "Green Ideas Committee" to review and introduce green initiatives to the office environment (as well as the business practice), recently establishing an accompanying website that features environmental information, feedback forum, and a green "tip of the week"
the committee most recently committed to a goal of diverting 95% of its in-house waste from the landfill, and added a worm composting bin to break down food wastes
as a result of this green focus, the company now serves organic teas and Fair Trade-certified coffee, and uses Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) certified paper in printers and copiers as well as ensuring that new office furniture purchases are made with FSC-certified wood products
employees are strong supporters of a number of community initiatives, including the annual Bike-to-Work Week event, the Commuter Challenge (almost 75% of employees choose alternative transportation on a regular basis), a clothing swap in support of the Salvation Army, Earth Day (celebrated with an earth-friendly potluck and book swap) and the Great Canadian Shoreline Cleanup (collecting over a dozen bags of trash last year), to name a few
operates a unique "Green Rebate Program" that provides a 25 percent reimbursement on qualified environmentally-friendly purchases (to $250 each year) -- almost half of employees took advantage last year, with items ranging from energy efficient light bulbs to transit passes to a Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certified home purchase
purchased a Toyota Prius hybrid for employees to use (and test drive) and also offers an employer-paid rebate (to supplement government rebates) towards the purchase of a hybrid vehicle
