Some of the reasons why SaskTel was selected as one of Canada's Greenest Employers (2013):
continues to evolve its broad "Eco(logical) Strategy" that was first developed in 2006, and has most recently implemented a new Environmental Management System (designed to align ISO14001 standards) that includes 35 employee representatives who receive training and are responsible for the implementation and oversight
has a unique "environmental category" as part of its flexible health and wellness spending account that lets employees apply their flex-dollars to environmental purchases for day-to-day activities, from transit passes to solar panels to high efficiency appliances for the home
has extensive in-house recycling programs in place for batteries, printer cartridges, office paper, light bulbs, phone books, wire and cabling -- and in communities across the province, the company sponsors local recycling projects for a variety of household items, including paint, batteries, and old telephone directories
has operated the unique "Phones for a Fresh Start" program since 2009, ensuring that customers have a place to recycle their wireless hand held devices -- an important initiative noting that virtually every part of a phone can be re-used and recycled -- and any proceeds are donated to the Provincial Association of Transition Houses and Services of Saskatchewan
established a "Greenhouse Gas Management" plan back in 2007, which has reduction targets for the use of electricity, natural gas and fuel consumption -- departments and individual employees are tasked with helping the company reduce and maintain consumption levels to a baseline 2011 year
established an Energy Performance Committee that consists of senior personnel from corporate, human resources and information technology areas who are tasked with looking for opportunities for energy savings and reductions
the company donates usable computer equipment to the "Computers for Schools" initiative, which provides thousands of refurbished computers every year to schools and non-profit organizations across the province
as part of a fundraising initiative, the company donates office furniture to the the in-house SaskTel Pioneers volunteer organization for refurbishment and sale to outside organizations -- the initiative diverted over 72,000kg of unnecessary waste from the landfill last year alone
