Chosen as one of Canada's Greenest Employers for 2013:
By Richard Yerema and Julien Gagnier, Mediacorp Canada Inc. staff editors   (Apr 21, 2013)

Some of the reasons why TD Bank Group was selected as one of Canada's Greenest Employers (2013):
  • recently launched the "Green Nation" program, which is a web-based tool that encourages employees to commit to undertake environmental actions at home, work and in their communities -- within one year of its launch over 4,500 employees committed to more than 100,000 acts of green, equal to saving over 6,000 tonnes of carbon and 200,000 trees
  • was the first Canadian bank to hire a "Chief Environment Officer" (the position is currently occupied by an environmental scientist with over 20 years of working experience in the field), who has spearheaded updates to the bank's Environmental Policy, which sets the bank's guiding principles for its environmental management system
  • has a 20 year history of supporting local community initiatives through its longstanding "TD Friends of the Environment Foundation" -- the impressive initiative has provided over $57 million to over 20,000 environmental projects across Canada since 1990
  • across the bank, approximately 80 employee-led green teams (and over 1,100 green coordinators at branch locations across the country) work to raise awareness about environmental issues through team building events, Earth Week activities, and volunteer opportunities with activities of the TD Friends of the Environment Foundation -- green team initiatives range from small branch specific activities to company-wide programs such as the "TD Go Paperless Challenge", where thousands of employees work to find ways to reduce paper usage across the bank
  • recently introduced "TD's Environment 101" online training program -- all new employees take the environmental education program, which introduces them to the bank's many environmental initiatives as well as highlighting actions they can take personally
  • the bank recently entered a partnership with the Nature Conservancy of Canada to protect an area of critical forest habitat equivalent to two football fields a day, every day -- and continues to support Tree Canada's "Green Streets" program to provide funding for innovative urban forest planning initiatives in communities across the country
  • in 2010, the bank became the first major North American bank to declare that its business operations were carbon neutral -- impressively, the bank's greenhouse gas emissions dropped by 11 percent from 2008 to 2010 (while proving that going green can be good for business, revenue grew by 29 percent in the same period)
  • the carbon neutral goal was realized through a range of energy reduction initiatives, from new lighting, upgrading of heating and cooling systems and adopting new design standards for its new construction, the purchase and support for green energy production, and through carbon offset purchases, including energy retrofits for schools, not-for-profit organizations and community housing projects -- and recently the bank made commitments to reduce carbon emissions by one ton per employee by 2015 along with paper usage by 20 percent by the same year
  • also promotes green building design in new and existing facility renovations that are based on LEED standards -- the bank has 16 LEED certified locations (including five Platinum and five Gold certified locations) as well as two net-zero energy branches that produce more energy than they use and even feature docking stations for electric vehicles -- and recently installed a green roof on its main downtown Toronto branch
  • offers a number of unique green financial products, including an insurance discount for hybrid and electric vehicles, an environmentally-focused investment fund, reduced rates for mortgages and lines of credit for qualified energy efficient homes and equipment
