Some of the reasons why TELUS Corporation was selected as one of Canada's Greenest Employers (2013):
- has introduced high definition TELUS Telepresence technology at many locations across the country (helping to reduce unnecessary travel) and encourages employees to work from home through its formal "Work Styles" program, designed to assist employees in adopting flexible work arrangements and reduce the number of trips to and from the office
- as part of its formal energy management program, the company aims to reduce the environmental impact of its operations, including reductions in greenhouse gas emissions (by 25 percent by the year 2020), reduced paper usage (by over 67 percent since 2006), working with BC Hydro's Energy Manager program to reduce electricity demand (and costs), and taking early steps to measure water consumption and established water efficiency guidelines
- has 15 Green Teams at office locations across Canada with over 150 members organizing a number of events, from workshops on energy conservation to eco-food events and even a recycling fashion contest
- Green Team employees also organize environmental film screenings and presentations with members also assisting in the planning of corporate initiatives such as a mobile device recycling drive as well as events to celebrate Earth Day, Environment Week and the Bike To Work Week commuter challenge
- in addition to reducing paper consumption, the company has made a commitment to increase its purchase of environmentally-friendly paper, purchasing only paper with a minimum of 30% post-consumer recycled content
- through the industry-led "Recycle My Cell" program, Telus recycled over 236,000 handsets last year and through the federal government-led "Computers for Schools" program, the company recently donated over 330 laptops, desktop computers, printers and monitors for use in schools, public libraries, not-for-profit learning organizations and Aboriginal communities across the country
- has demonstrated a strong commitment in building for the long term, with its Toronto and Ottawa office locations achieving Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Gold certification (and its Toronto data center targeting LEED Gold) and its renovated Québec City location achieving LEED Silver certification (the first in the city)
- and the company new corporate headquarters in Vancouver is being constructed to LEED Platinum standards, and will feature rooftop solar panels, triple-glazed windows, a rainwater harvesting system for non-potable water, outdoor terraces, and state-of-the-art building control systems to help reduce energy consumption
- has applied much creativity in harnessing the power of social media to generate interest, awareness and financial support for environmental initiatives, including a Twitter campaign in support of Tree Canada, and raising over $100,000 for the Nature Conservancy of Canada as part of a Facebook "new critter" campaign -- customers and Facebook friends selected a Saw Whet Owl to be featured in the now familiar Telus ad campaign
