Chosen as one of Canada's Greenest Employers for 2009:

Some of the reasons why Town of Banff was selected as one of Canada's Greenest Employers (2009):
recently introduced four new diesel-hybrid transit buses (wrapped with wildlife educational messages) that reduces carbon emissions more efficiently than conventional diesel buses -- and constructed the bus maintenance facility to capture rainwater that can be used for washing the vehicles
has introduced an organic waste drop-off program with secure waste collection bins for residents and visitors, recognizing that backyard composting runs the risk of attracting wildlife inside the National Park
recently launched a program (called Towards Zero Waste Events) to work towards the elimination of non-recyclable garbage generated from Banff's many special events
is pioneering the testing of new LED street lighting, which uses over 30 percent less electricity than conventional and fluorescent fixtures, need replacing once every ten years and offers reduced light pollution levels (an often overlooked form of pollution)
helps to celebrate Earth Day with other community organizations through a variety of events, from bird walks to collecting discarded electronics
