Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce / CIBC

Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce / CIBC
Chosen as one of Best Employers for New Canadians for 2009:
By Rachel Caballero and Richard Yerema, Mediacorp Canada Inc. staff editors  (Apr 1, 2009)

Some of the reasons why Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce / CIBC was selected as one of Best Employers for New Canadians 2009:
  • designs special training programs for Career Bridge interns, including lunch and learn workshops on topics such as Canadian culture, career development, and networking
  • created a "Newcomers to Canada" web portal on their careers website with advice for new Canadian jobseekers
  • promotes the hiring of immigrants by sharing resumes with other recruiters across the organization
  • trains recruiters on how to hire internationally-trained professionals
  • integrated an online database of new Canadian resumes into their recruitment management system
  • have hired more than half of their Career Bridge interns to permanent full-time positions
  • participates in a unique "speed mentoring" program where new Canadians meet with recruiters one-on-one (in partnerships with ACCES Employment Services)
  • attends job fairs targeted towards new Canadians, such as the "Just Jobs Hiring Fair" and "the New Canadians, Aboriginals and Minorities Job & Education Fair"

The CIBC-YMCA Connection to Employment program

The bank recently launched the "CIBC Connection to Employment" program, in conjunction with the YMCA in Toronto. New Canadians seeking jobs in the Canadian financial services sector enrol in a free five-week pre-employment program. Participants receive job search training and assistance, and learn about the skills required to obtain jobs at the CIBC or at other financial institutions. CIBC has hired over half of the program's participants in loan operations, trade finance, and customer service roles at the bank.

I moved to Canada in August of 2008 and began the hard task of finding a job that would enable me to develop a career in financial services. I was extremely fortunate to have been selected from a pool of more than 640 newcomers to Canada to participate in the Connection to Employment Program. I received training in job-search strategies and Canadian workplace culture. I also learned a great deal about teamwork, negotiation skills, and the Canadian financial system. I have no doubt in my mind that the opportunity offered me by CIBC will advance my career and help me contribute to the Canadian community.

 Attracting New Canadians Online

CIBC manages "Newcomers to Canada", a specialized web portal specifically for immigrant jobseekers. It provides information on credential assessment, language training and assessments, local community agencies, mentorships and internships specifically for new Canadians. The site also includes a diversity recruitment calendar that includes a list of workshops and recruiting events specifically for new Canadian jobseekers.

CIBC is also the first bank in Canada to integrate the resume database Skills International into its web-based recruitment management system. Skills International is an online database of internationally-educated professionals who have been pre-screened and deemed job-ready by employment advisors and community agencies. Employers can perform searches based on criteria such as skills, education or experience to find candidates who match available job openings.

Providing Career-Track Internships to New Canadians

CIBC provides new Canadians with valuable Canadian work experience through the Career Bridge internship program. Established in 2003, Career Bridge provides four, six or twelve-month paid internships to immigrants who have been in Canada for less than three years. To be considered, immigrants must apply online and meet eligibility requirements. Impressively, CIBC has hired more than half of their Career Bridge interns to permanent jobs within the bank and many have been promoted to senior financial analyst roles. The bank also provides specialized training to Career Bridge interns, including workshops on Canadian workplace culture, networking and career development. CIBC managers who hire interns receive cultural sensitivity training to anticipate the needs of Career Bridge candidates.
