Some of the reasons why Manitoba Hydro was selected as one of Best Employers for New Canadians 2013:
  • participates in the University of Manitoba's Internationally Educated Engineers Qualifications Program, a 12-month program to help internationally educated engineers become accredited in Manitoba -- Manitoba Hydro provides funding for the program, bursaries for students of the program and have hired students from the program
  • partners with a variety of local community organizations including Success Skills Centre, Employment Projects of Winnipeg and Red River College's Immigrant Student Support Centre, to name a few, to support the employment efforts of new Canadian job-seekers -- through these partnerships, Manitoba Hydro has participated in a number of activities such as mock interview workshops and fundraising dinners
  • manages an in-house "Work Experience Program" for recent immigrants who are interested in developing their skills -- participants may occupy unpaid internships ranging from 3 weeks to 3 months to help them gain work experience in a specific field of employment
  • also works with Manitoba Labour and Immigration to help fast-track employees who require foreign credential assessment, and also recognizes foreign credentials when determining pay grades for new employees
  • in partnership with Assiniboine Credit Union, helps newcomers settle by offering assistance to set up bank accounts as well as other services
