Providence Health Care

Providence Health Care
Chosen as one of Best Employers for New Canadians for 2009:
By Rachel Caballero and Richard Yerema, Mediacorp Canada Inc. staff editors  (Apr 1, 2009)

Some of the reasons why Providence Health Care was selected as one of Best Employers for New Canadians 2009:
  • considers years of international work experience when determining the starting salaries of new Canadian nursing employees
  • provides paid work placements to internationally-trained nurses enrolled in a provincial program for new Canadian nurses and hires them when their work practicum is completed
  • holds lectures and workshops to help new Canadian nursing employees adjust to providing healthcare delivery to a multifaith, multicultural patient population

 Recognizing International Work Experience

Providence Health Care includes international work experience when determining starting salaries for new Canadian nurses. The organization places as much value on international work experience as they do international educational qualifications.

Providing Work Placements to Internationally-Trained Nurses

Providence Health Care provides eight-week paid work placements to internationally-trained nurses enrolled in British Columbia's Internationally Educated Registered Nurses Post-Licensure Project. After finishing the program, nurses are hired to permanent, full-time positions on the same unit where their preceptorship was completed. This enables internationally-trained nurses to continue to receive support from the same colleagues they trained with as they transition from a work practicum appointment to permanent, full-time employment.

Helping New Canadian Nurses Adjust to the Canadian Healthcare Industry

Internationally-trained nurses may be unaccustomed to healthcare delivery in a multicultural, multifaith patient population. To address this need, Providence Health Care holds lectures and workshops on the cultural aspects of healthcare delivery for new Canadians who have not worked in a multicultural environment before. The organization also produces training materials and other in-house resources on how to deliver culturally-appropriate healthcare.
