Some of the reasons why Regional Municipality of York was selected as one of Best Employers for New Canadians 2013:
  • established the York Region Immigration Settlement Strategy to support new Canadians and is currently developing a three year action plan which outlines goals to increase employment of new Canadians as well as efforts to help them understand the Canadian workplace
  • also created the York Region Immigration Portal, a website to provide newcomers with resources and information on settlement and employment
  • recently hosted an Internationally Educated Professionals Conference to connect government representatives, professional associations, employers and new Canadians -- the conference provided newcomers with opportunities to network as well as discuss related issues
  • developed an in-house guide to foreign credential evaluation process and utilizes World Education Services, a third-party credential assessment service, to determine the qualifications of internationally trained professionals
  • in partnership with the Toronto Region Immigrant Employment Council (TRIEC), facilitates skills development workshops for new Canadians which include communication and business writing skills
  • provides internship opportunities through partnerships with organizations such as Career Bridge
