Royal Canadian Mint is a Crown corporation that mints and distributes all of the country's circulation and collector coins as well as currency coins for other nations.
Established in 1908, the Crown corporation has locations in Ottawa and Winnipeg. The Ottawa mint specializes in the production of hand-crafted medals and commemorative coins, producing an average of 8,000 collector coins every eight-hour shift. The Mint is an official supporter of the Vancouver 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games, producing circulation collector coins in celebration of the winter games. Outside of the Ottawa facility, the Winnipeg plant mints all of Canada's circulation coins, producing more than 1 billion coins each year. In addition to Canada, the corporation mints circulation and commemorative coins for countries in Asia, Europe, Africa, the Caribbean and Latin America. The Royal Canadian Mint also provides gold and silver refining services to other countries and recently established an in-house silver refinery, which has allowed it to process a wider range of material into collector coins and refined bars.
